As avid divers and engineers, we’ve long been frustrated by the limitations of traditional scuba masks. For individuals who wear corrective lenses, the lenses glued into standard masks often create more distortion than glasses due to their placement far from the eyes. To compensate for this distance, these lenses must be thicker, larger, and heavier. Unfortunately, this design deviates from thin lens formulas, resulting in less clear, less comfortable underwater vision.

We knew we needed to bring the lenses closer to the eyes. However, this required reducing the compression space that silicone skirts typically use to deform and create a watertight seal against the face. The solution was clear but challenging: design custom skirts that maintain fit and functionality for every unique face.

Accessibility doesn’t end with vision correction. Many divers struggle with poorly fitting masks that don’t account for the diversity of human facial structures. A poor fit not only causes leaks but also discomfort that discourages participation in the sport. Customization was essential to address both problems, and our design process incorporates facial data to ensure every mask is tailored for a precise fit.

The challenge grew further: no 3D-printed material is soft or durable enough to function as a mask skirt. To withstand UV light and saltwater conditions, silicone remains the only viable option. However, silicone skirts must be injection molded, which is traditionally impractical for one-off custom designs.

After two years of research and development, we perfected a process to create precision molds that allow us to cast custom silicone skirts. These skirts fit a wide range of face shapes, maintain a watertight seal, and accommodate corrective lenses closer to the eyes for unparalleled clarity. Our innovative approach makes it possible to deliver both comfort and functionality in one seamless design.
